In the mid-1980s, Dr. Klatt decided the best way to raise money for cancer research was to do what any reasonable person would do—run forever. In 1985, he spent 24 hours running and walking more than 83 miles around a track while friends, family, and patients paid $25 to suffer alongside him. Somehow, this marathon madness raised $27,000 and attracted nearly 300 spectators. While still circling the track, Dr. Klatt thought, “What if more people did this?” The next year, his idea became a team relay, raising even more money—and eventually turning into thousands of Relay For Life events across the country. Turns out, one very tired runner started a nationwide tradition. 🏃♂️😄🎗️
Dr. Klatt was diagnosed with stomach cancer in March 2012. Many people from around the world sent him letters and emails to support him. That same year, he joined Relay For Life as a cancer survivor and spoke at the opening ceremony in Tacoma, Washington. Dr. Klatt died on August 3, 2014, at the age of 71, from heart failure after fighting stomach cancer.
Without his love of helping others and running in circles, we wouldn’t have what we know today as Relay for Life in Second Life.
