Around the Grid: First Things First

Hello my fellow residents. Some of you might have read me before, and for some I might be a completely stranger. But nothing wrong with that. First things first, let me introduce myself. I am Alex and I use this column as an excuse to go around the grid and jump in front of strangers like a certified weirdo and ask them a completely random question about our everyday Second Life living. Now, for those who might have read my previous articles, I rewarded myself with a little break over the summer, but now, I am back and ready to continue my lifelong quest of making random people stop what they’re doing and answer ridiculous questions. I have been equipped with some more questions, put on my boots, grab my notebook and off around the grid we go! But this time we are under a new roof, because…why not? So, are you ready? Enough with the talking….Let’s get back to it.

An excuse to roam the grid armed with one random question and absolutely no shame. The result? Honest answers, funny stories, strange habits, and the little everyday moments that keep Second Life interesting, all ready to be…judged my way!

You know what fascinates me? How we all log into the same virtual world… yet somehow every one of us begins the day differently. Or not. It’s almost like walking through the front door of our own home. We don’t stop to think about the first thing we do, we just do it. It’s what makes our virtual lives feel… well, ours. But do these daily “rituals” differentiate from each other? or are we all trapped inside the same loop? So I needed to ask…

~What’s something you always do when you log in?

Krystal Kleinman

Krystal logged in with wholesome motives… “Check on my friends to make sure they’re ok.” She is doing welfare checks before she’s even fully rezzed. I mean, that’s nice, don’t get me wrong but what if someone is not there? What if they missed the bus or locked themselves outside the house, or…got a blue screen on their way to log in? Do you assemble a search party? But I am sure Krystal can figure that out with that good heart she has!!

Dahliette ღ (dahliette)

Dahliette took the same direction but kept it strictly operational: “Check who is online!” Ok, let’s be real. You aren’t just checking in, you are launching a full-scale FBI surveillance operation. You don’t even wait for your mesh head to render before opening the friends tab, do you? If nobody’s online, do you just log right back out? Because that is some elite-level grid gatekeeping right there. Don’t get me wrong though, that’s fine. I am sure she checks for her friends too and if nobody is there she carries on with her day.

Amélie Tautou (amilee34)

Amélie said “I check messages and see which friends are online.” Well, she starts by checking her messages before seeing which friends are online. Must be nice. Some of us log in to an inbox emptier than an abandoned skybox. before seeing which friends are online. Must be nice. Some of us log in to an inbox emptier than an abandoned skybox.

Cole Tender

Some of you grid wanderers and shopping addicts probably know Cole. The owner of [GHB] Let’s see what goes down!. What else would a creator do the moment he logs in? “I check if I’ve received any customer support messages” and then he is right back to what he loves. “After that, I’m usually standing on my work platform, getting straight back to creating.” Then, completely out of nowhere, he apologized for giving me a boring reply… “Sorry… it’s a really boring answer!” I mean, come on Cole, boring? You literally own a business. You do something you love and that brings you money. That’s a great life there! Be sure you check out his store guys, it’s worth it.

Elisabeth Moussa (elle.canare)

Elisabeth grabs her purse and heads right out to explore, she doesn’t want to miss a thing… “I’ll check what is new in the destination tab and explore for a bit” She might be the only person in this entry who remembers that Second Life actually has a massive world to see! I admire that, as a fellow wanderer.

ŁUNΛ CΛMELOṪ (lunacamelot.starling)

Luna looks for her loved ones when she logs in… “The first thing I do when I log in is check which of my closest friends and family are online.” Then before she carries on with her day, she treats herself like she is in the season finale of a fashion show. “After that, I usually start changing my avatar. Every time I log in, she usually gets a whole new look.” If we didn’t have names over our heads at this point, I wouldn’t be surprised if her own friends occasionally thought, “Who is this person, and why are they greeting me like we’ve known each other for years?”

ℓαℓα (laety.wiles)

Now Lala…hm I think, Lala got excited with the question and got carried away with it and told me her whole day’s routine instead “I join my friends on Second Life, we chat, play games, and I DJ on Second Life or I go listen to music, relax, or explore sims” I mean, girl, take a breath! Most people take five minutes just to rez their hair, but Lala logs in with the energetic agenda of a hyperactive golden retriever let loose in a park. It’s ok though, I like it, keep up with that energy Lala!

So there you have it, folks. Whether you log in like a undercover agent running background checks on your friends list, a corporate ladder-climber handling customer service tickets on a work platform, or a full-blown fashion addict changing your entire identity before breakfast, one thing is abundantly clear, we all come in here to have fun and everyone can choose to start their day off their way. That’s the magic of Second Life.

Now that I think about it, I rarely check who is online as the only person I need and care about the most is right there with me, my beautiful fiancé. And that’s how I always want to start and end my day!

I want to thank you to everyone who took a moment out of their day to share a little piece of their virtual life with me. Every answer, whether thoughtful, funny, or completely unexpected, is what keeps this little journey alive. Keep making Second Life your own, until the next time our virtual lives cross paths again…Around the Gird!
