The Magical Frog Reading Bog

A Bit About Mrs Red ( In Her Own Words )

Mrs. RedWrath Karu began her start reading in SL like any other person, reading to a child. It started in 2020 at home, reading a story about a children’s camp to her own child who was gearing up to attend. When she realized that she was struggling to make it to the available public story times maybe others were. In this moment, she began recording herself read to and with her child for YouTube and the rest is history.

She records all of her storytimes for YouTube so you can always go back and listen, you can check them out here: https://www.youtube.com/@ribbitreadings

The ‘Magical Frog Reading Bog’ is the home location for Mrs.Red’s storytimes. While she reads all over the grid and for various Relay for Life teams and events, such as Freedom Rock, I Pink I Can, Relay for Life Weekend. She can be found there from time to time, hosting readings and other fun activities for everyone.
This location also houses ‘The Frogtacular Museum.’ Which is a personal collection of all things frog-related that she has purchased and or been gifted here in SL.

Sugar How do you keep the children engaged during story time?

Mrs. Red says she uses pauses within the stories to ask questions to the crowd. She is animated and engages them naturally with her frog persona.

Sugar Do you use expression, gestures, or different voices when reading?

Mrs Red Yes, absolutely! Every Character is deserving of a different voice or inflection; it’s important to give them their own personalities.

Sugar How do you adjust your reading style for different ages?

Mrs Red This is a great question and one that was actually pertinent to her storytelling adventures later today. She posts blurbs in several locations to ensure the audience has time to understand that the story is for “older ears.”

Sugar How do you choose which books to read?

Mrs Red I choose books based on what season, holiday, or event is coming up, as well as anything that catches my fancy. When it comes to Relay for Life, I have included books on Cancer and how it affects children and families.

Sugar Do you include diverse stories and characters?

Mrs Red Absolutely, I feel that many of the books I’ve read and continue to read have a wide range of stories and characters; that’s the joy of reading.

Sugar Are the books age‑appropriate and interesting for the group?

Mrs Red All books are age-appropriate and interesting for the group!

Sugar How do you help children understand new words or ideas in the story?

Mrs Red Always, some books even include a back page with a dictionary of words used within the story. I will go over that at the end to ensure everyone has the right understanding of what they heard.

Sugar Do you ask questions before, during, or after reading to build comprehension?

Mrs Red Of course, this goes back to an earlier question; it’s best to encourage discussion when possible without breaking the flow of storytelling for too long.

Sugar How do you encourage children to think about the story?

Mrs Red By asking questions and keeping their young minds engaged.

Sugar How do you involve children during the reading (predicting, repeating lines, discussing pictures)?

Mrs Red Sometimes, especially if were reading a hide and seek book where things need to be found, or if there’s an animal escaping, I’ll ask where they think it may be running to.

Sugar What do you do if a child loses focus?

Mrs Red People are allowed to lose focus, real life steps in, and lives can’t pause. It’s okay, and I don’t usually correct this; I understand.

Sugar How do you support children who are shy or reluctant to participate?

Mrs Red If I know a child is shy and they comment in local chat, I make a point to address their comment specifically if I can. That way I hope it encourages them to talk more when they’re feeling less shy.

Sugar How do you make story time enjoyable and positive?

Mrs Red By just being me, silly as that sounds, I feel like people are only going to attend if they already enjoy me as a person.

Sugar How do you encourage a love of books?

Mrs Red Animation in the form of energy. By being animated while reading it sets the children up for wanting to try that on their own!

Sugar What types of books do you recommend for home reading?

Mrs Red While I don’t usually have families ask me for book recommendations, If I know theres more books in a series I will recommend that. It’s really all about what the child may express being interested in.

In Mrs Reds own words……. By the time she made it to high school and began theater class, projecting loudly to an audience was no issue, and she was often called on to read aloud to her classmates. All of this brings us to today.

Creating joy for others in the form of storytelling and taking this into her charity work, she does for Relay for Life. While this article is set to release after my next storytime, I do hope you come to check out my events, take photos, and remember what it was like to be a kid when someone took the time to sit down with you and read to you.

Reflection on the Journey Back to Childhood

In reflecting on this experience, I realize the point I wanted to make about interviews and certain people in our lives. In this world, SL IS there are many who, like Mrs. Red, and especially Mrs Red, have the rare ability to take us on a journey. They remind us of simpler times, and for a moment, we feel like kids again.

It’s as if they unlock something deep inside us that has been buried under years of responsibility and stress. When we revisit those memories—those feelings of innocence and wonder—it helps us escape the pressures of adulthood, even if just for a brief moment. It’s therapeutic, refreshing, and reminds us of the joy we once felt without all the complications of life.

So, my hope is that, by reading this, you’re inspired to take a trip down memory lane too. Let yourself be transported back to those carefree moments. It can be a powerful way to reconnect with yourself and find peace in the midst of the chaos and lets all find The Frog Bog.
