Second Life has many mysteries. Why do landmarks multiply? Why does hair sometimes detach and fly away? And why, oh why, does every Friends List look like a chaotic scrapbook of our entire virtual past.
We all have that moment. You log in, feeling cute, and instantly someone messages you as if they were waiting at your digital doorstep with binoculars. Then there are the names you swear you have never seen before. They sit there like forgotten socks. No photo, no picks, no memory attached, yet for some reason they remain.
Then you have the quiet ones who never say a word but teleport you at the worst possible times. One minute you are adjusting your lipstick, the next you are suddenly somewhere very public, very bright, and very unprepared. Your only thought is please let my outfit have rezzed.
The truth is every Friends List in Second Life is a little comedy show. It is full of ghosts, ex crushes, mystery people, and the occasional surprise cameo from someone you forgot existed. And somehow it is still sweet. Because even the strangest names remind us of how many tiny adventures this world gives us.
Below are the lyrics to my song Friend List, a playful wink at the beautiful chaos we all scroll through every day.

(verse 1)
I’ve got this friend,
I’m sure you have one too..
In the moment that you log online, they message you
But let there be delay…
In the reply you make…
They’ll type a single question mark, and log off. Poof.
(verse 2)
I see this name
Upon my list
I am not completely sure who this person is
Profile image not so clear
Groups and picks all disappeared…
I hover over remove, but never seem to make it click.
(Chorus)
A friend list is a funny place
Where names come and go without a trace
Some are rarely ever online and some you always see…
I see him on the map almost every night
God, why did I give her my edit rights…
I see her offline but she’s dancing right in front of me…
(verse 3)
We all have that friend
That hardly ever says a thing
But makes up for lack of words by endless TP’ing
In those moments so private and intimate
You thought you clicked ignore but just missed it
You land nude in the middle of a club. OH F U.
(Final Chorus)
A friend list is a comedy,
Of ghosts and crushes and old memories,
Some say “brb” and never come back to me.
That one’s in a group chat, clearly still alive,
That one’s been “offline” since 2005,
And somehow they’re all still family.
A friend list is a funny space,
With alts and lovers we can’t replace,
Some we muted, some we lost, some pretended to be away.
I scroll through names I can’t recall,
But I keep them there. I keep them all
Because deleting feels too final in this game we play.
