THE STORMY STREET

It was a dark rainy night. You could see the lightning brighten the dark clouds…

Each flash revealed the empty street in broken pieces—the crooked houses, the trembling trees, and the lone woman hurrying beneath the streetlamps.

THE PURSUIT

He was following her.

I knew it before she did. I had seen him do this too many times before.

Wherever he went, I was forced to follow. Through rain and mud. Down abandoned roads. Into places where no decent soul would willingly go. No matter how desperately I wanted to turn away, I couldn’t. I had been tied to this man for far too many years.

The woman glanced back. She had noticed us.

Her pace quickened.

So did his.

THE ALLEY

I wanted to warn her, but fear had kept me silent for so long that silence was all I knew. I had been there for the others. I had followed as he stalked them, heard their final cries, and carried the weight of what he had done long after he left them behind.

The rain fell harder.

Water rushed along the curb and washed over the trail we left behind, but some stains cannot be washed away. They remain with you, pressed deep into places no one thinks to look.

My skin had grown tough over the years, but my soul could not endure much more.

The woman turned into a narrow alley.

A mistake.

He followed her into the darkness. I resisted with every bit of strength I had left, dragging behind and slowing his advance.

THE SCREAM

She stopped.

For one hopeful moment, I thought she had heard us.

Then he stopped too.

The only sound was the rain striking the metal fire escapes. Somewhere nearby, a Halloween skeleton creaked in the wind, grinning down as though it already knew what was about to happen.

The woman looked back.

Lightning tore across the sky.

She saw us.

And she screamed.

Her scream vanished beneath the thunder.

WHAT REMAINED

I tried to hold him back. I fought every movement and begged him to stop, though I knew he would never listen.

He never had.

By morning, she was gone, and once again he walked away while I carried the evidence of what he had done. Guilt clung to me like the mud from that alley. I had been present for every terrible act, yet I had never found the strength to stop him. I hated myself for it.

This time, however, he had made a mistake.

THE TRAIL

The storm had not erased everything.

The police discovered a trail leading away from the alley—the same peculiar mark they had found near the others.

They followed it through the cemetery and along the rain-soaked streets, until it led them directly to him.

THE FALL

When the police came, he ran, forcing me to flee with him once again.

He drove me onward, harder and faster, but years of carrying his secrets had worn me down.

For the first time, I refused to continue.

Something inside me gave way.

He stumbled and crashed onto the wet pavement. The officers surrounded him before he could rise.

As they took him away, I remained behind—silent, battered, and stained by everything he had done.

For years, I had followed his every step.

At last, I was free.

The Story Behind The Sole Witness

I originally wrote this story many years ago for a college assignment.

Although there are lines from the original story that I still remember word for word, some of the details have faded over the years. I have filled in those missing pieces as faithfully as I could. I believe the original version was a little more lighthearted.

What I remember most clearly is how the twist at the end caught everyone completely off guard. Their reactions made the experience memorable enough to stay with me all these years later. Hope you enjoyed it.
