Could you survive a month without buying clothes, shoes, accessories, or makeup?
Staff Writer Magenta DeVinna is finding out.
For many of us in Second Life, shopping is simply part of the routine.
Weekend sales. Event openings. Marketplace. Seraphim. Facebook. Flickr. Primfeed.
We tell ourselves we’re “just looking,” and before we know it, we’ve bought something we absolutely had to have… only to discover months later it’s still sitting somewhere in our inventory, completely forgotten.
Sound familiar?
That’s exactly what happened to Magenta DeVinna.
After repeatedly uncovering purchases she didn’t even remember making, she decided to try something that would make many Second Life shoppers break out in a cold sweat:
Thirty days.
No buying clothes.
No shoes.
No accessories.
No makeup.
Instead of chasing the latest releases, she’d spend a month rediscovering everything she already owned.
When I caught up with her, she was on Day 16 of the challenge. So naturally, I had to ask…
Editor’s Note: This interview was conducted on Day 16 of Magenta’s 30-Day Shopping Fast. Depending on when you’re reading this, she may already have crossed the finish line… or she may have been defeated by a weekend shopping event. Either way, we’re rooting for her.
Could YOU Do It?
Before you read any further… Be honest. Which one would be the hardest for you to give up?
☐ Marketplace
☐ Weekend Sales
☐ Seraphim
☐ Event Shopping
☐ Facebook Shopping Posts
☐ Flickr Shopping Posts
☐ “It’s only L$50…”
Keep your answers in mind as you read. You might discover you have more in common with Magenta than you think.

It Wasn’t One Purchase… It Was Hundreds
When I asked Magenta what inspired the challenge, she admitted there wasn’t one dramatic shopping spree that finally pushed her over the edge.
Instead, it was something much more relatable.
“There wasn’t really a specific moment, if I’m honest. It was more a culmination of weeks and months of putting outfits together, then digging through my inventory for a top or some bottoms to go with something new I’d bought, only to come across things I’d either never worn or had no recollection of buying at all.”
Then came the realization.
“Knowing there were things I’d bought thinking, ‘I will die if I don’t buy this!’ only to never wear them made me realise that maybe shopping every weekend sale and every event wasn’t quite as necessary as I thought it was.”
I suspect more than a few readers just glanced nervously at their own inventory.
There Had To Be Rules
This wasn’t about making herself miserable. It was about creating a challenge she could realistically finish. She banned herself from buying clothes, shoes, accessories, and makeup.
Hair?
Absolutely not.
“I didn’t limit buying hair because I LOVE new hair, and including that would just be setting myself up to fail.”
We all have our weaknesses. Apparently hers comes with bangs and a fatpack.
She also gave herself permission to buy home and garden items because they were never a major temptation to begin with. A sensible strategy if you ask me.

The Hardest Part Wasn’t Shopping
The biggest surprise? Shopping events weren’t the problem. Social media was.
“The hardest part, honestly, has been social media.”
Facebook.
Flickr.
Primfeed.
Watching favorite creators release beautiful new products every day.
“Seeing designers and creators I love releasing awesome things and not being able to have that immediate gratification of owning them was HARD!”
Instead of convincing herself she’d never own those items… She simply reminded herself she could always buy them later. Funny how waiting a few days often turns a “must-have” into a “that’s nice.”

A Surprisingly Organized Shopper
I assumed Magenta was constantly refreshing shopping blogs. Turns out… She had a system.
“I knew when most of the events I liked took place… As for weekend sales, I’d check on Saturday mornings to see what was on offer and then make a list. It was all very organised and methodical!”
I have to admit…
That’s a level of shopping organization I wasn’t expecting.
The Biggest Temptations
Some events were easier to ignore than others.
The Saturday Sale
Summerfest
Equal10
Access
General event openings
Facebook shopping posts
But one event proved too risky to even visit.
“I haven’t been to Lewd Station yet… Even just walking around it is enjoyable, but I knew I’d cave there, so I just didn’t go.”
Turns out it’s much easier to avoid buying something when you never teleport to the event in the first place.
One Simple Question Changed Everything
Magenta did visit a few events. She picked up demos. She looked around. But she never clicked Buy. Instead, she started asking herself one question.
“Is this good enough to fail for?”
Every purchase suddenly had to justify ending the challenge. So far… Nothing has. Well… Almost.
She admitted buying a couple of skins during a weekend sale. For one brief moment I thought the challenge was over. Then she reminded me skins weren’t actually on the banned list.
Crisis averted.
One simple question that might save a lot of impulse purchases.

Fantasy, Sparkles… and Wings
Even the strongest resolve gets tested. For Magenta, it wasn’t just shopping events. It was fantasy.
“It’s also been hard seeing the new collab for the Celestial Starlight collection because I love fantasy and sparkles…”
Then she admitted the real temptation.
“I do want the wings from Stoic so much, though!”
Nobody said this challenge would be easy.
Shopping… Her Own Inventory
One unexpected discovery wasn’t a forgotten treasure. It was a color palette.
“I have way more black and white options than anything else.”
Now she’s intentionally digging out colorful pieces she’d forgotten she owned. Sometimes shopping your inventory is just as rewarding as shopping an event.
Apparently… I’d Never Worn This
One of the funniest discoveries came while browsing her inventory.
“I have stumbled across a few things that still had the default grey tone selected…”
Translation? She bought them. Never picked a color. Never wore them. We’ve all done it. Some of us… more than once.

71,000 Items Later…
Magenta estimates she has around 71,000 items in her inventory. That’s before unpacking years of archived boxes. Somewhere, someone reading this with a 250,000-item inventory just smiled and whispered… “Amateur.”
The Biggest Change
Interestingly… Her daily Second Life routine hasn’t really changed. She’s still blogging. Still exploring. Still taking photos. Still spending time with friends. The difference isn’t how she spends her time. It’s how she thinks about shopping.
“It’s just made me appreciate my inventory a bit more and reminded me that I already own plenty of things I genuinely love.”
Friends Don’t Help
When I asked whether her friends had been supportive… She laughed.
“They have 100% encouraged the spending. They call it empowering, I call it enabling!”
Every shopping friend reading this is suddenly looking very suspicious.

Day 31 Plans
So what’s the first thing she’ll do when the challenge finally ends? No hesitation.
“TP’ing straight to a shopping event that had something in I demo’d and wanted to buy, probably! lol”
Some habits never really disappear.
Has It Worked?
Surprisingly… Yes.
“Even with some things I probably would have bought immediately before, once I’d demoed them and waited a few days, the urgency to own them has faded.”
Sometimes… FOMO just needs time. Not because the item became less beautiful. But because waiting answers the question every shopper eventually asks:
Did I really want it…
…or did I just want it right then?
Advice for Anyone Thinking About Trying This?
Her first response was immediate.
“Don’t! Lol.”
After the laugh came genuinely good advice. Know your weaknesses. Adjust your rules. Give yourself a chance to succeed. For Magenta… Hair was never up for negotiation. Honestly… I can’t argue with that logic.

So… Will She Make It?
At the time of this interview, Magenta had officially reached Day 16. Halfway there. Still resisting. Although… Some of the month’s biggest shopping events were still waiting.
Her final answer summed it up perfectly.
“It’s been over two weeks, and I don’t feel like I’m missing out…..yet. We have some big events coming up this week though, so maybe ask me again next weekend!”
I think we will.

Final Thoughts
This challenge was never about proving shopping is bad. It wasn’t even about saving Linden Dollars. It was about pressing pause long enough to appreciate everything that’s already there.
New events will open. Weekend sales will return. Exclusive collaborations will come and go. But chances are… Your next favorite outfit isn’t waiting at the newest event.
It’s already sitting quietly somewhere in your inventory.
You just haven’t rediscovered it yet.
Of course… we still fully expect Magenta to come home with some new hair on Day 31. 😉
