Mae’s Closet ~ Wedding Edition: The Modern Bride

Welcome to Mae’s Closet.

Every other week, I curate a complete Second Life look—mixing designers, details, and a little attitude—to bring a themed outfit to life. From the statement pieces to the finishing touches, this is where my vision comes together.

Before anyone asks: no, I did not get married lol. However, with Bridal Season in full swing, I thought I would leave my little pink paradise, grab my good friend Garrix, and put something together. Brides, grooms, weddings and receptions have changed in so many ways. I’ve decided to do some research and have found some interesting trends for couples seeking a cleaner, softer and more modern aesthetic for their special day.

Many traditions revolving around bridalwear has been reinvented or turned upside down in the most creative ways. Many modern brides now turn to alternative resources to achieve their dream dress at a reasonable price. Some may to go thrift stores or estate sales, looking for vintage pieces at a low cost or to have customized and altered. Some of the more creative and crafty brides will go looking for old lace or damask curtains or even crocheted table clothes to wear over a slip. Other brides may want a more practical approach in both price point and comfort, opting to find a more simple dress of whatever color they prefer, that they could easily wear for another occasion and dress it up with a shawl, cape, bolero or a blouse topper.

Options for grooms have expanded exponentially as well. More and more tailors and men’s fashion designers are striving to create suits that aren’t just for the work place or funerals but instead are experimenting with different textiles, silhouettes and accessories to offer more opportunities for comfort, movement, practicality and self-expression.

The inner culture amongst engaged couples and their attendants has loosened it’s rigorous hold on the roles each person may play. Some examples would be instances where the bridesmaids are offered to choose dresses that they feel comfortable and beautiful in, asking only that they stay within a certain color palette or mixed gender wedding parties. While there will always be the occasional bridezilla or groomzilla as it were, an emerging tradition I find especially sweet is when a bride will forgo the standard bouquet toss and instead walk it over to someone she and the groom have mutually chosen; presenting it to her as either a helping hand towards her own impending engagement or simply to let her know she is cherished.

Traditions may change, but something that always remains is that weddings are an opportunity to express love, gratitude and commitment to those who play a pivotal role in this journey we call life.

I would like to say a HUGE thank you to Garrix for his time, effort and patience for not only helping me create this segment, but for also being an unfailing source of sage advice, sing offs, meme swapping, and last but definitely not least, an unconditionally bottomless well of encouragement and kind words. I’m especially going to appreciate it when I ask him to do another segment with me (insert maniacal laughter here).
