The Merry Pranksters – Oldest continuous music venue in Second Life
Second Life’s longest-running home of live music and good company
Second Life’s oldest continuously running music venue is a home for live music and good company. Founded by Nancy Lie, it began on Darkstar around 2005. Alongside Kevinbear Wantanbe and Monty, she built a welcoming community. Musicians including Max Kleene got their start here. In 2008, they moved to their own sim to provide a more secure and welcoming environment for the Merry Prankster community after repeated disruptions on the mainland. Following the loss of Kevinbear in 2009, Zany took over management of The Merry Prankster, carrying forward the spirit of music and friendship Kevinbear and Nancy had helped establish.
Change of sim from Mainland to their own sim
The venue moved to its own sim in 2008. Today, a board behind the treehouse stage honours the performers and friends who helped shape its history. Some are no longer in Second Life. Others are no longer with us, but their contributions live on. The board behind the stage at the Merry Prankster is a wonderful reminder of just how many talented artists call Second Life home. Across all genres, these musicians bring an incredible range of sounds, styles and influences to our virtual world. Each name represents a unique voice and a passion for sharing music, reflecting the creativity and diversity that make Second Life’s live music scene so special.
Pickin’ Parties
Nearly 21 years later, that welcoming spirit continues. Sunday Pickin’ Parties at 7 give new performers a chance to play. It’s a place for musicians who love music, and people who love to listen. Pickin’ Parties are informal live music gatherings where musicians can share their talents in a friendly, supportive setting. At The Merry Pranksters, Pickin’ Parties give newcomers a chance to perform and meet the community. In keeping with the venue’s tradition, performers must play an instrument. For audiences, these gatherings offer a relaxed way to discover new talent and enjoy live music.
The Prankster Gals
The Prankster Gals—Zany (zany.xevious), CreCre (creola.deledda), and ReneMarie Thereian—bring warmth, professionalism, and a shared love of music to every show. They greet everyone with a friendly welcome and help newcomers feel at home. Their support for live music takes time, care, and dedication, much of it behind the scenes. That commitment helps make Prankster a welcoming place for musicians and music lovers alike.
The Viral Voice Afterparty
The Merry Pranksters recently hosted an after-party for Eric Steffensen, winner of The Viral Voice Season 7. Musicians and passionate music lovers came together for several hours of celebration, cheering Eric on. Throughout the season, Merry Pranksters staff and members supported Eric as his onstage dance crew, as dedicated voting members and as paid audience in the two part finale, culminating in the Grand Finale performances.
