Samuel James on a Winter’s Day

The first time I ever heard Samuel James sing, I was having a really bad day; like top level bad. I was invited by one of my best friends to hear this new singer she and her boyfriend had found, but I feared that I’d be such poor company that I declined. So she offered to screen share on Discord, saying, “Just listen for at least a few minutes”. I agree and after listening for a those scant few minutes, my immediate response was, “TP me”.

The soft pitch that one tends to find in Indy artists, combined with his ability to remix a song so uniquely that it’s easy to not realize that you’re hearing a song you’ve heard so many times over, because he’s made it sound like a completely new creation, stood out almost immediately. Add that to his humility and a sincere desire to connect to those who come to his shows, it becomes a truly immersing musical experience.

I had the pleasure of catching his set at Celebration Square today in their winter pavilion over at Serenity Park. With the cool, soft tones of white and blue under a canopy of fat, fluffy snowfall, the pavilion is set up like it’s own little island; surrounded by a generous expanse of ice for skating with elements scattered around to help capture those special little moments.

Standing in the pavilion in the center of it all, one can almost hear the soft crunch of the show and a soft winter breeze entwined with the strains of Samuel’s music to create a moment of soft winter magic that enveloped all who was in attendance. If you are seeking a voice and music style all it’s own for a special date night, a moment of reflection or inner peace, a performance by Samuel James is a great place to start.
