Mae’s Closet ~ Wedding Edition: The Bohemian Bride

Welcome to Mae’s Closet.

Every other week, I curate a complete Second Life look—mixing designers, details, and a little attitude—to bring a themed outfit to life. From the statement pieces to the finishing touches, this is where my vision comes together.

Nope… still not married lol. This time, I wanted to explore some of the beautiful ways that couples have chosen to veer a bit off of tradition and make their special day feel truly personal. So naturally, my search engine and I had some quality time together and I’ve learned some interesting tidbits that can be easily applicable in this crazy place we call Second Life.

One of the aspects that stood out to me the most was the way that couples integrated their personal heritages and cultures into their ceremonies. Examples such as adding symbolic rituals like handfasting, combining small tokens that represent milestones in the individual’s lives as well as after they became a couple to indicate the blended lives or deeply personal vows written for each other. From my own culture, it’s not just one person being lead in by a singular escort, but both by their entire family, each side following until they meet in the middle to symbolize the blending of families, bloodlines and clans as well as to surround with couple with a visible memory of the love and support they have around them. The couple then joins hands and walks to the officiant together, with both families joyfully following. I’ve always found it a beautiful and moving sight.

Decor, attire and economizing takes on a completely different vibe as well. Whimsy and comfort take full priority with many deciding not to wear veils or even shoes. Fabrics that flow, feel lightweight and allow for full breathability as well as mobility are often the mainstay. Decor that is thrifted or handmade takes pride of place; while inherited or legacy building objects are treasured and cherished in a way that is deeply heartfelt.

The bohemian wedding is one of harmony, nature, culture, individualism and a willingness to embrace that which is outside the norm. I’ve never attended or been a part of one that I didn’t marvel at or just have an overall great time; in any world.

I would like to say a HUGE thank you to my new friend Sem who, on the urging of a wonderful friend, stepped up at a moment’s notice, threw on a suit and was just an all around great sport. He’s currently serving as Mayor of [Captive City], a rp environment where I’ve been told the tea is always hot and the barbeques are always spicy.
