Cryptic Harmony A Voice Made for The Blues & Second Life
VENUE ~ Cafe Musique
Host ~ Mimia (MimiaMimia)
There are some singers in Second Life that you stumble across once or twice, and then there are those voices you recognize almost immediately.
Cryptic Harmony is one of those voices.
I’ve been following Cryptic’s career in Second Life for years, and if you’ve spent any amount of time around the live music scene, chances are pretty good you’ve heard her too. She has been singing in Second Life for what seems like almost as long as she has been here — 13 years, 9 months and, by my count, somewhere around 5,049 days.
And honestly, I think she pretty much started singing on day one.
What makes Cryptic stand out isn’t just that she can sing. There are plenty of talented singers in Second Life. It’s the feeling she brings with her when she steps up to the microphone.
Cryptic flows onto the stage with a glowing energy and a soulful, slightly sassy voice that seems to hang around long after the song is over. There’s something wonderfully familiar about it.
Her style is unmistakably rooted in blues, but she doesn’t stay trapped in one genre. Her performances move through different sounds and styles, with everything connected by that unmistakable voice and her ability to make a song feel personal.
You might hear B.B. King’s “The Thrill Is Gone,” Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around,” and plenty more along the way.
And this is the kind of music that makes me want to sit back, relax and just listen.
There’s a certain quality to Cryptic’s voice that reminds me of walking into a local pub around 9 or 10 at night. The place is packed, conversations have gotten quieter because everyone is listening, and there’s a singer on the stage belting out one great song after another.
That’s Cryptic.
I would absolutely go listen to her in Second Life, and I’d probably go listen to her in real life too.
“I love to touch people’s emotions through singing and to share what is in my heart.”
— Cryptic Harmony
I think that pretty much says it all.
A Singer Who Connects
One of the things I enjoy most about live music in Second Life is that it can create that strange little feeling that you’re not actually sitting behind a computer.
The right performer can make a virtual venue feel intimate.
Cryptic has that ability.
Her shows are filled with laughter, passion and genuine connection. There’s a warmth to her performances that makes it easy to settle in and stay awhile. And when you combine that with a soulful blues-influenced voice, you get the kind of performer who can turn a regular morning or afternoon in Second Life into something worth remembering.
Life hasn’t always been easy for Cryptic, and she says those experiences have only deepened her sound and shaped the musical spirit she brings to her performances.
Maybe that’s part of why the emotion comes through so naturally.
She isn’t simply singing the words.
She’s feeling them.
Welcome to Cafe Musique
And then there’s the place where I recently found myself enjoying Cryptic’s music — Cafe Musique.
If you’ve been around the Second Life music scene for any length of time, you probably know the name.
Cafe Musique has been a staple of the Second Life live music community for as far back as I can remember. Honestly, it feels like almost every performer in SL has stepped onto the stage here at one time or another.
And there’s a reason for that.
Cafe Musique has become one of those places that feels like part of the fabric of Second Life music.
Set along the beach, it has exactly the kind of atmosphere you want when you’re listening to live music. Grab a seat, take in the scenery, listen to the performer and let the rest of Second Life wait for a little while.
From early morning through the afternoon, there is a good chance you’ll find someone performing for the crowd.
And that’s one of the things I really love about places like Cafe Musique.
You don’t necessarily have to plan your entire day around going to a concert. You can simply wander in, hear music coming from the stage, and decide to stay.
Those spontaneous moments are some of the best parts of Second Life.
Catch Cryptic Harmony Live
Cryptic currently performs regularly at several Second Life venues, giving fans plenty of opportunities to catch her live.
Her weekly performance at Cafe Musique is every Wednesday at 9 AM.
She also performs biweekly at Vindicated Gardens on Tuesdays at 10 AM, Juici Lu’s on Thursdays at 10 AM, and Gran Finale on Fridays at 9 AM.
She also has varied availability, with current weekday openings between 7 AM and 10 AM.
For bookings, Cryptic asks that interested venues contact her directly.
You can find her music schedule and information through her website and calendar, and follow along with her Second Life activities on Primfeed.
But honestly, my advice is simple.
Go hear her.
Find a beach chair at Cafe Musique. Grab a drink. Turn up the volume. And just listen.
Because sometimes the best way to discover a Second Life performer isn’t by reading about them.
It’s by sitting in the audience when they start singing.
And when Cryptic Harmony starts singing, you’ll know exactly why she has been doing this for so many years.
