Blue Finch: Where Every Path Tells a Story
A 1ON1 Conversation with Dianna Harmony
Teleport ~ Blue Finch
There are beautiful regions in Second Life, and then there are places that make you slow down, take a breath, and simply wander. Blue Finch is one of those rare destinations.
I’ve known Dianna Harmony for quite some time, and if there’s one thing I’ve always admired about her, it’s the incredible attention to detail she pours into everything she creates. Walking through Blue Finch reminds me of the work of a Disney Imagineer—every pathway, every hidden corner, every flower bed, and every scenic overlook feels intentionally placed to tell part of a larger story. Nothing feels random. Every visit reveals something new.
Blue Finch isn’t just another picturesque destination. It’s a heartfelt tribute to family, nature, friendship, and the memories that shape us. It also serves as the home of the AVI Choice Awards Theater and Events, making it one of Second Life’s premier community gathering places.
I recently sat down with Dianna for an 1ON1 interview to learn more about the inspiration behind Blue Finch and the passion that continues to drive one of Second Life’s most beloved region designers.
“It’s a magical woodland…”
For readers who haven’t yet visited Blue Finch, how would you describe the sim and what makes it special to you?
“It’s a magical woodland region, with a huge variety of flowers, plants, and wildlife. From fireflies and butterflies to deer, bunnies, ducks, and otters. My mother was very into nature and raised me to appreciate everything about it.”
That appreciation is immediately obvious. Blue Finch doesn’t simply look beautiful—it feels alive.
The Story Behind Blue Finch
Blue Finch is such a unique and memorable name. Can you share the story behind it and how it connects to your mother and hometown?
“My mother was an amazing pottery artist. She named her studio Blue Finch after a blue finch bird she referred to as her totem bird. Whenever something good or bad was about to happen—or had happened—she would see one. Pottery Hollow was the small town where her first studio was located. She later moved, but always had fond memories of that house and her first studio in Pottery Hollow.”
Knowing that history gives the region even more meaning. What visitors experience today is deeply rooted in family memories and love.
Building with Heart
When you were creating Blue Finch, what emotions or memories were you hoping to capture?
“I feel a strong connection with my mother, almost like she’s guiding me along the way. The memories of spending time with her and exploring nature as a child. I hope others can see that love and connection too.”
That emotional connection quietly flows throughout the region and is perhaps what makes Blue Finch resonate with so many visitors.
A Favorite Place
Are there any locations within Blue Finch that hold particular personal meaning?
“With all the cute little areas and detail, I’d probably say my mom’s pottery studio.”
It’s a beautiful tribute, and one that serves as the emotional heart of the region.
Creating a World Worth Returning To
What inspired you to build a destination with so much to see and do instead of focusing on one theme?
“I want people to come back often and spend time here like it’s their own. As much as I like themed destinations, I love regions with a lot more to offer. I like to add everything I can into my builds while still making it all flow together. That’s hard to do sometimes, and it’s why it takes me so long to finish a build.”
As someone who has explored countless regions across Second Life, I can honestly say that balance is exactly what makes Blue Finch stand apart.
It’s All About the Details
What has been the most rewarding part of seeing people experience Blue Finch?
“People really enjoying all the details I have put into it. Sometimes I spend a lot more time than I should on areas thinking no one will notice—but they do! I love that people take the time to notice the little things. It makes it all worth it.”
Those little things are everywhere, rewarding visitors who choose to slow down and explore.
The “Peep” incident happen while I (Samual Wetherby) was afk working on AVI Choice Awards theater on the sim. I came back to find myself surrounded by these HUGE Pink Peeps. Set to physics, they attacked me as I moved. I Gathered them all up and dropped them a few 1000 meters to the ground. Seems he was the only one that survived the fall.
Second Life Isn’t Just a Game
Your profile says Second Life is a virtual world rather than a game. What does that mean to you?
“I’ve met some amazing people over the last 18½ years. Many I consider real-life friends. Kimmy, Brahm, and Beth Harmony—my brother and two sisters—are three of my very closest. I have many people I consider real-life friends and family, and some I’ve even met in real life.”
Community has always been one of Second Life’s greatest strengths, and Dianna’s story is a wonderful example of that.
Meeting the World
How has Second Life helped you create friendships you may never have experienced otherwise?
“The only country I’ve been to is Mexico. Second Life allows you to meet and connect with people all over the world. I love that about SL.”
“Get Off the Landing Point!”
What’s one thing you wish visitors would discover beyond the landing area?
“That’s actually a pet peeve of mine. People land somewhere and just stand there. I hope visitors discover all the rides and tours, then take a walk through the rest of the region. I hope they find the little date-night spots and secluded places where they can just hang out and take a deep breath.”
I couldn’t agree more. Blue Finch rewards exploration.
Designing for Everyone
How do you make the region welcoming to both new and longtime residents?
“I try not to make it overwhelming when you land. I also try to provide as much information as I can. There’s nothing worse than landing somewhere and having no idea where to start.”
Merchant and Creator
Does owning ButterCups influence how you design Blue Finch?
“Not really. They’re two different things that keep me busy in Second Life. I love doing both.”
Do sim design and store design share the same creative process?
“Slightly different because it’s indoors. I’m not as good at decorating inside as I am outside for some reason.”
The Creative Process
What does a typical building day look like?
“Some days I just sit and stare at one spot. I start rezzing a bunch of things and rearranging them over and over until I like it. Then I decide I don’t like it, delete everything, and start over.”
Anyone who’s ever built in Second Life will probably smile at that answer.
Seasonal Challenges
What’s the biggest challenge maintaining Blue Finch?
“Changing everything from Summer to Halloween, then Christmas, then Valentine’s in such a short time. I mostly do it myself, but I have to give a big shout-out to Kimmy, Beth, and Camme Carver for stepping in and helping when I need it.”
Hidden Treasures
Is there anything visitors often overlook?
“Probably the small tucked-away areas. Baby Groot is running around, and there’s also a frog in a suit. There’s even a map showing where Groot is. Also… the hollow tree tunnel. It’s pretty hidden!”
Looks like I’ll be searching for Groot again on my next visit.
AVI Choice Awards
You’ve become a sponsor and nominee for the 2026 AVI Choice Awards. What does that recognition mean to you?
“I never did any of it for recognition. The founder of AVI Choice is a longtime dear friend of mine, and I simply wanted to help. As for the nomination, I was so excited. I felt appreciated for all the long hours and detail I put into Blue Finch. I also felt like I was up there with the big kids because there are some truly amazing region designers.”
What motivated Blue Finch to sponsor the AVI Choice Awards?
“She needed a region to have it on, and I have one.”
Sometimes the simplest answers say the most.
When It Became More
Was there a moment when you realized Blue Finch had become something bigger than a personal project?
“I’ve wanted a full region almost since I joined Second Life. Even back then there were incredible regions that inspired me. I always knew I’d have one someday. It took time getting here, but I finally did… and maybe someday I’ll have even more. When I win the lottery that I never play!”
Listening to the Community
How important is community feedback?
“Very important. It’s how I grow and learn. I want to know what people liked, disliked, or may get tired of seeing. I tend to have the same style, so I want to incorporate different ideas from the feedback I receive. I should make a suggestion box.”
A Mother’s Legacy
If your mother could visit Blue Finch today, what do you think she’d say?
“I think she’d tell me she was really proud and that it was really beautiful.”
What lessons from your mother have influenced how you build communities?
“She taught me to be kind, compassionate, caring, trustworthy, and patient. You never know what someone else is going through. A kind word—or even just a smile—goes a long way.”
That philosophy may be the true foundation Blue Finch was built upon.
Looking Ahead
What keeps you passionate after all these years?
“The residents. As long as they keep wanting to visit, I’ll keep building. I enjoy it. I can get lost in it.”
What’s next for Blue Finch?
“I’m adding half of a Homestead that will become a seamless extension of Blue Finch—minus the sim-crossing lag! The rentals will be private, but the rest will remain open to the public. My next build is Halloween, which will be my fourth or fifth year. Stay tuned! It’s always a fun one with rides, attractions, and our annual Halloween Party featuring live singers on October 24.”
If you’ve experienced one of Dianna’s seasonal regions before, you already know you’re in for something special.
One Last Thought
If someone visits Blue Finch for the first time today, what do you hope they take away from the experience?
“I hope they experience the peace and tranquility, the beauty of the scenery, and that they find joy in the little things.”
Final Thoughts
After spending time talking with Dianna, one thing became abundantly clear: Blue Finch isn’t simply a beautifully landscaped region. It’s a living tribute to family, friendship, creativity, and kindness. Every winding path, hidden trail, scenic overlook, and quiet bench exists because someone genuinely cared enough to build it with love.
In a virtual world often filled with fast-paced events and constant distractions, Blue Finch encourages something increasingly rare—it invites you to slow down.
Take the boat tour. Ride the bicycle. Play a round of mini golf. Wander through the gardens. Hunt for Baby Groot. Discover the hidden tree tunnel. Sit beside the water and simply enjoy the view.
Like Dianna herself hopes, you’ll probably leave appreciating the little things.
